What HCG is

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone made of two non-covalently bound subunits: an alpha subunit shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a unique beta subunit that gives the hormone its specificity. It binds the LH/hCG receptor and is one of the most studied signaling proteins in reproductive endocrinology. Activity is expressed in international units (IU) against a reference standard.
